Hey angels,

I've promised myself I'm going to mix things up a little around here. It's easy - and often smart - to stick with what works. This post for example has been on rotation for over a year and still does well each week (& I’m forever grateful for it too as I grow the account!).

Over here on the newsletter, I found a format pretty early on and stuck to it - highly recommended for anyone growing their own newsletter, since you’re not starting entirely from scratch every send. That being said, I have some new ideas for what I’d like this newsletter to be. A Phase 2 of The Wellness Dose, if you will.

Specifically: I'm bringing some incredible female writers onboard. Women at the centre of wellness, with sharp and different perspectives, who'll go out into the wild world of wellness and report back. Trying the treatments, tests, trends, tools - and we’ll collectively answer the questions I get every week in my inbox each week like "do colonics actually work?", "is HBOT worth the money?", "which microbiome test should I get?", "What's the best wellness clinic in [insert city]?"

I’ve not decided yet whether it’ll still be called The Wellness Dose - honestly the first issue is in its infancy - but it's the most excited I've been about this newsletter in a hot second, so I'm taking that as a sign to go at full speed.

And… I’d love you to be part of it, so if you’re partial to writing about wellness - here’s the application link to join us.

Let’s get into it.🤍

Your quick hits to be hotter, healthier & wealthier →

HOT

  • New launches: Therabody's new hand-cooling device reduces core body temperature between sets or sprints - helping athletes get 58% more reps in their final set. For those of us who don't need pro-level kit just yet, this Shark launch with a built-in cooling plate and icy mist will probably do the trick (it even attaches to gym machines and bikes!). Post-workout, refresh with Nécessaire's new antioxidant-rich eucalyptus cooling spray & wipe, inspired by their heavenly body wash.

The weird, wonderful & wild from that biohacker event

Earlier this month, 5,000+ health-obsessed headed to Dave Asprey's "biohacker playground" - Beyond. Now in its 14th year, the 3-day conference in Austin, TX (where else?) covers everything from liver testing to keynotes on nicotine (Asprey calls it "The Longevity Molecule"...), stem cells, psychedelics - and, well, plenty of misinformation - culminating in "The Spirit Animal" dance party with none other than Steve Aoki.

Events like these leave me with mixed feelings about the longevity crowd. Partly because Asprey is the archetypal longevity bro (exhibit A), and anyone who nicknames themselves "the father of biohacking" without a doubt has a raging god-complex. But mostly because breathing at his conference - which promises to help you "live longer, think clearer, and lead at your highest level" - sets you back $2k for the entry-level ticket. Which does at least include the dance party (phew) and unlimited Danger Coffee, Asprey's 100% mould-free "remineralised coffee" that you almost certainly don't need. Wanna go VIP? That'll be $5k please.

In fairness to Asprey - there's no doubting he's an extraordinary businessman and marketer. He's previously suggested he invented "mould-free" coffee - "an industry that didn't exist before, now a billion dollar market." Petrifying or genius? Either way, if all 5,000 attendees bought a basic pass, that's $10m in revenue. Factor in the VIP tier and what looked like a trillion sponsorships at every turn, I'd guess he's closer to $20m.

Annoyingly, I'm fascinated by the tech and new launches on show - so I figured I'd save us all $2k and share some that caught my (virtual) eye:

A human charger

I have a theory that those in the wellness world believe that the more obscure-looking they can make a device, the more they can charge for it. Exhibit A: this $17k tabletop contraption designed to "replenish natural energies" in just 10-15 minutes a day. It lights up, makes a buzzing noise and sort of crackles too.

What is it: A 4-in-1 sci-fi-looking device with PEMF, light therapy, a high-voltage electric field and sound frequencies - with claims ranging from detoxification to DNA reprogramming (extremely questionable).

Hot take: IMO it’s a nice novelty for a bougie spa quiet area - but to get the most from the science-backed benefits, you could save roughly $14k by opting for a good PEMF mat and a powerful red light panel instead.

Biohacked air

CC: BRIAN KRAISER

I'd seen Kayla Barnes talk about the NanoVi before - she raves about it for reducing oxidative stress (when free radicals outnumber antioxidants in the body, causing damage to DNA, proteins and cell membranes), using it for an hour a day at her desk.

What is it: Another tabletop device - except this time you place it near your nose (or use a cannula, to look extra biohacky and make sure it gets right up in there) and inhale what they call "water-absorbing electromagnetic energies" - a scientifically slippery phrase in itself. NanoVi claim their device emits near-infrared light through humidified air, which they say "structures" the water droplets in a way that mimics your body's own cellular repair signal. Inhale it, and theoretically your cells start repairing the damage.

Hot take: Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if in 2-3 years we're all sleeping in some sort of fancy air device connected to our Oura. Until then, it's hard to find any independent peer-reviewed studies proving the device actually repairs cell damage and NanoVi strangely don't link to the studies they reference on their own website, including a claimed 15% HRV improvement. At $6k+, I doubt we'll all be adding it into our rotation anytime soon. Thankfully, there are plenty of proven ways to reduce oxidative stress for free: exercise, good sleep, antioxidant-rich foods (berries, dark leafy greens, olive oil) and breathwork.

Liver shots

I wonder if it's a side effect of us all becoming more drink-aware alongside our collective obsession with detoxing - either way, we're all now a bit more clued up about how important the liver actually is. This brand sponsored the Steve Aoki rave (smart move) with their "de-liver-ance" shots - and it took me longer than I'd like to admit to clock that it's a wordplay on deliverance.

What is it: A 17-ingredient herbal drink shot blending Chinese medicine with western herbs to support liver health - taken daily.

Hot take: I like the look of this, and the convenience of it too - it’s all natural, with everything from ginseng to choline. But at £227 for a month's supply, it would need to work miracles. Which, in fairness, some reviews suggest it might - with plenty sharing liver blood work improvement screenshots as “proof”. I'd probably save this for pre any summer drinking sessions, so I shall report back. For everyday use, according to AI, you could DIY this with separate supplements for around £40 a month.

So, will I be applying for a press pass for Asprey's 2027 conference? Why not. I think so long as you go knowing that much of what's being stated as fact is often a little way off, and that you'll be upsold at every turn - it's a fascinating window into where wellness is headed. Biohackers and their routines are niche, until they aren't.

PS. if you’re still here, please could you do me a huge favour and tell just one of your wellness-loving friends about The Wellness Dose? Every new subscriber honestly makes my day, and helps me (& the new team!) continue to bring you more content.

See you next week,
