Sometimes you just need a little inspiration to get the paper and pen out - so consider this yours for April.

The best journal practice is always the one you'll actually stick to, and from personal experience, lowering the bar on how long you commit to it each day makes a surprisingly big difference.

For the next 30 days, simply tell yourself you'll answer one prompt a day. Some days you'll find yourself writing for 10+ minutes, others it might just be two lines - eventually you'll notice it feels almost odd when you don't get the notepad out. On that note, leave yours somewhere visible - I keep mine next to my bed with the pen already in it as we need to remove all the potential excuses when we're trying to build a new habit.

IF ONLY MY WRITING WAS THIS AESTHETIC

It also helps to find a time that actually works for you. The Artist's Way tells you to write before anything else, but that never worked for me - I'm someone who needs to get up, walk, eat and then suddenly it's time to start the working day. So I journal in the evenings and play a little mental game with myself: I can't get my Kindle out to read until I've journalled and meditated. It works because it's a habit stack with something I already love doing - and reading then feels like a reward too for committing to my practice. I’m not perfect, but I’m much more consistent than I’ve ever managed before.

If the prompt doesn't resonate on a particular day, simply answer this instead: what's been one win today? It trains your brain to notice more positives - the everyday beauty, if you will, that's already there. Once you've answered the prompt, feel free to let whatever else is in your head spill out. And if that's nothing - call it a day. Journal practice complete.
