Hey lovely,

Jasmine here, Editor of Daily Rituals, back with your Wellness Dose.

There's something to be said about a new month landing on a Monday, and TikTok has indeed come to the party as apparently today is the first day of "The Great Lock In of 2025." Whether you're locking in for the last few months of the year (or simply continuing with the routines & rituals you’ve put in place already this year), now's the perfect time to start the 12-week year (especially since you'll be done by December - surely we're not locking in through the holidays too?!). And if you’re not sure where to start, this simple daily question will help.

As always, thank you for being here. I'm so grateful for you.

The best stories & updates that caught our eye this week →

  • 🖤 To the dark side: Grunge glam searches are soaring on Pinterest right now (specifically "clean grunge makeup," which is sort of an oxymoron?), so prepare to dust off your smokey eye palette this fall. Not sure where to start without looking more panda than Prada? Same girl. This is a must-watch.

  • 👶 Wellness babies: Clean & organic baby formulas are the latest wellness category expansion, and it makes sense - if more moms are willing to pay a premium for cleaner everything, they're naturally questioning store-bought formula too. Enter Nara Organics who just launched the first USDA-certified organic whole milk formula with $32m in funding (we were today years old when we learned most formula uses skimmed instead of whole milk). Whilst investor signals are promising for what's to come in this category, the challenge remains (in the US at least): the government controls 90% of the $2bn formula market, so breaking through won't be easy.

  • 💄 The launch list: Fashion might be meh this month, but beauty really said hold my setting spray. The standouts: Makeup by Mario's weightless matte eyeshadows (perfect for said grunge moment), and two setting sprays aiming to replace powder entirely. We were sold on Danessa Myricks' Blurring Balm spray after watching this, while Laura Mercier's skincare-in-spray formula is already getting rave reviews, but for the acne-prone girlies - it sadly failed the pore-clogger check. Haircare wasn't sleeping either: K18 dropped HeatBounce, their 2-in-1 conditioning heat protector, Shu Uemura's answering our glass hair needs with their rice-water infused glossing liquid, and Dyson's new boujee silicon-free Omega oil promises non-greasy shine with a light citrus scent - anyone else find it a lil strange to see their name on such an aesthetic bottle

  • 💍 Ring wars: The smart ring market is currently being rather dramatic, and petty - if we say so. Oura just sued (and won) against Ultrahuman and RingConn in the US trade court, banning imports into the States entirely. "But what about Samsung's Galaxy Ring?" cry the Android crowd - well, Samsung already managed to beat Oura in federal court, pointing to their sensor placement differences. But it's far from over - Ultrahuman is now suing Oura in India, and the jury's still out on who will "win" in Europe. One thing’s for sure, for US girlies eyeing the Ultrahuman ring - it’s probably a good time to buy the remaining stock.

  • 🚨 On that note: Oura just announced new U.S. manufacturing to support its work with the Department of Defense (DoD), supplying smart rings to help track soldiers’ health and readiness. On paper, it’s framed as performance optimisation - keeping troops healthier and more deployable - but critics worry the same biometric streams could easily slip into deeper surveillance (we’ve all watched enough Netflix dramas to know how that goes). Oura insists consumer data isn’t part of the deal, yet Reddit users aren’t buying it - meaning from a brand perspective, the company’s lost some serious, well, aura points recently.

  • 🥗 Seed oil sanity check: Still confused by seed oils? Join the queue. Listen to this for some clarity from a registered nutritionist who brings receipts. Turns out rapeseed oil isn't the villain we've been led to believe - just make sure to buy it cold-pressed (and probably don’t mention it on TikTok, the carnivore dieters will come for you..).

  • 👀 Brand lore: If ever there was a new brand to watch, it would be Lore. Founded by beauty's "Dream Team" per Business of Fashion, Melanie Bender was previously on exec teams at Rhode, Merit and Versed before launching her own project this year. Dropping September 2nd with Sephora following later in the month - whilst their Instagram following is still small (early days and all), Melanie’s broadcast channel is worth a peek, if only to study how to actually run one people don't immediately regret joining. We're hoping (read: praying) for clean ingredients list so we can debut their dreamy bottle on our countertop, but the jury's still out..

Your latte has a dirty little secret, apparently..

"I'll take one mould-free, pesticide-free, organic coffee, with homemade coconut milk, without gums, sweeteners, thickeners and oils please."

That's wellness influencer Katherine Garbario's coffee order. Mould-free coffee is the wellness world's latest culprit, with biohacker bros & wellness influencers alike turning their nose up at your favourite local barista's artisan blends (what a sad little life Jane) in fear of mould contamination.

Nope, not the kind of mould we see in our slightly neglected fruit bowl by the end of the week, rather an invisible (more potent) type called mycotoxins.

@PINTEREST

Sounds scary, right? Especially since said well-fluencers aren't wrong per se. The point, though, is they're entirely missing the bigger picture.

Coffee actually ranks very low when it comes to potential mycotoxin exposure and there's plenty of regulations in place to ensure acceptable levels are way below anything that could cause us harm, especially in Europe. Sure, you could argue that our daily exposure to such low levels could add up over time, but if eliminating all traces of mould from your diet is your goal, coffee wouldn't be the place to start. Things beating it include nuts, whole grains, and cocoa - yet no one is making a big scene about those. And rightly so - these foods are usually linked with plenty of long-term health benefits, so clearly the trace levels aren't having a hugely negative impact.

★ The DR Verdict ➔

We won't be searching for mould-free coffee to replace our current favourite blend. "Mould-free" might sound reassuring, but it's more marketing than medicine. There's no official definition (wellness could do with a few more of those, actually!), and no coffee is ever 100% mould-free (that's just nature), so it's certainly not worth paying a premium for or taking the joy out of your weekend post-Pilates coffee date.

If you roast beans at home (how very fancy of you), make sure to store the unroasted beans in an airtight container as these are more prone to mould. And if you're a regular coffee addict like the rest of us, don't sweat it. In fact, on that note - if you're genuinely concerned about supporting your body's natural detox processes, you could hit the sauna regularly (or use this handy at-home alternative). It helps with elimination through sweat and feels infinitely better than skipping your morning coffee.
