The best stories & updates that caught our eye this week →

  • 💊 Spotlight on Vitamin D: Finally getting some much-deserved love, a new study shows that vitamin D3 supplements may preserve telomere length and slow cellular ageing. Not a clue what telomere length means? Join the queue. Basically, telomeres are the protective caps on our DNA, and they get shorter every time a cell divides. When they get too short, cells stop working properly and ageing accelerates. Who’d have thought it - we've all been told to take vitamin D because we're likely deficient, but turns out it's been doing way more than just bone & immune support this whole time.

  • 💡 Talking of supplements: Not sure which supplements actually work & are worth your ££? With creatine gummies containing zero (yes, nada) creatine making headlines recently, getting an expert opinion* on your supplement stack has never been more needed, and let's be honest - your GP isn’t about to get into the details of each brand or dose you ought to be taking based on your specific goals & needs. Stop the guesswork & have a no-pressure online consultation instead.

  • 🍋 Rhode's laughing at us: Hailey's new Lemontini Peptide Lip Tint launched on her IG starring a gold waist chain holder that looks like ultimate designer tampon storage.. After the Glazing Milk Mist mirror holder’s & their very familiar feminine design, we're convinced these add-ons are purely a PR play (and in her defence, it's working). Good news though - she's fixed the grainy texture of the original formula, and the rest of the lineup is getting the upgrade next month.

  • 🧴 Hair care therapy: Drybar founder Alli Webb, well-known for her perfect blowout, just launched Messy hair care for that "undone" look created with the Messy Method - somewhere between air-drying and blow-drying. We were fans until we saw the product names: "I am transformed," "I am enough." Why can't styling cream just be styling cream? Dear beauty brands, not everything needs a wellness play, especially if it's a genuinely decent product.

  • 🩸 Bezos wants your blood: Okay, not really. But the retail giant just launched at-home blood testing in India - as if our Amazon carts couldn’t get any more random (toilet paper, bone broth, & a blood test, why not?). Granted, it’s very convenient, with results in just 6 hours, but do we want Amazon to have our blood? Feels a little Black Mirror.

  • 🧘‍♀️ Mindfulness cashes in: Big week for wellness apps - Daily Rituals favourite Othership raised $11.3mil to expand their IRL sauna breathwork experiences across the US, while Calm launched B2B services in the UK and Canada. Nothing says "we really care about employee wellbeing" quite like forcing everyone back to the office then offering them a meditation app subscription to cope with it.

  • 🧠 Brain training boom: "Cognitive fitness" is having a moment - Muse launched their S Athena headband for real-time focus feedback & training, while Samphire Neuroscience just raised $5mil for their Nettle headband device targeting PMDD and menstrual symptoms. The brain feels like such a black box right now - if these brands want to move beyond curious biohackers, they'll need to easily explain how & why their devices actually work (PSA, a page with a long list of studies isn’t going to cut it).

  • 🍗 Saved for later: You asked for recipes, so here's this week's fave - a one-pan 10-minute buffalo chicken rice dinner with 43g protein. Plus, the creator lists full ingredients, easy-to-follow steps, and macros - heavenly.

Why you’re not seeing tampon ads

SPOILER ALERT: THEY CONTAIN WOMENS BODIES..

I've always found it interesting that when it comes to women's health products like pads, tampons, condoms and the like, you only really hear about them through close friends. Typically, you'll share a very intimate problem you're facing, a few rosé’s deep, and a friend may offer up a suggestion as it turns out they've also been suffering & going through their own trial and error. Take the Flex Disc I use - I've lost count of how many times I've told people to switch to it instead of tampons or those incredibly uncomfortable cups (personally, one public toilet disaster with a cup is enough to scar anyone for life!). But, in Flex's defence, they can't exactly show a nice lady smoothly inserting her period disc and easily retrieving it, blood and all, on their Instagram page.

They probably don't want to either, but you get the idea. It's very much if you know you know. & honestly, I don't know - I stumbled upon Flex deep in a Google search (yes, ChatGPT wasn't around when I started using them, crazy stuff?!) and for a while would even pay for shipping from the US as I used to use their single use discs (FYI the reusable disc is far superior!) because I was over toxic tampons and hadn't seen anything similar in the UK.

Social apps wouldn't let them post their up-close-and-personal reels anyway. Apparently even saying "vagina" is too risqué for Meta's (likely male-trained..) algorithms. It's why a few female care (& pleasure!!) brands have moved over to OF. But why should need to have OF on my phone, and lets not forget - hide/explain why it's there should anyone borrow my phone - just to find out stuff I probably ought to know by now?

Thats exactly why 190+ health leaders have co-signed an open letter calling out social platforms for routinely censoring women's health content, pushing for change. The letter aims to get more women's health info online and reduce stigma around topics like our periods.. Since if we (& especially younger generations) don't see more content on women’s health, how will anything ever change?

So, if you'd like to take back a little control over your feed, here's the link to sign.

PS, if you’d also like to offer up a female health hack or product that’s changed your life, please hit reply. I’ll create an anonymous list & reshare!

An underrated wellness brand you need to know

YOGI’S LISTEN UP

If you've been to basically any wellness event in London, there's a good chance you've done your workout on one of these yoga mats. There's a reason every studio is obsessed with them, but from speaking to women at the same events, most are yet to level up their at-home lineup (aka that strange colour Amazon mat they panic bought during COVID to stay sane).

The issue is that most yoga mats promise to be grippy and non-slip, but few rarely deliver. Worse, most are way too bulky for our small storage spaces and don't fit with the neutral aesthetic of our homes. Not this one - in a beautiful warm sand colour and with the brand's latest Ever Grip™ tech, something about just stepping onto it makes you feel a little more at peace and sort of closer to the earth?

The DR Verdict

I've been lucky enough to spend some time with Kat, the founder, over the past few months (and even experience one of her dreamy flows in studio - 10/10!), and hearing the work, process and thoughtfulness that goes into creating each mat to ensure it truly delivers on its promises makes it worth every penny. So, if you're ready for an upgrade or know someone who wants to shop with a sustainable female founder-led brand, you know what to do!
